Despite being out of the spotlight for a number of years now due to a controversy, Don Cherry has been honoured with an interesting statue in Saskatchewan.
Over the years, few broadcasters have caught the hearts and minds of Canadian hockey fans like Don Cherry, who hosted CBC's Coaches Corner for years alongside Ron MacLean. He would go on to leave the show in 2019 after another controversy, but he hasn't fallen completely out of the spotlight.
Recently, it was announced that in Mortlach, Saskatchewan, Cherry has been honoured with a massive 15-foot tall statue of the broadcaster alongside a five-foot tall replica of his dog Blue.
The artist responsible for the impressive work has opened up on the idea behind it, revealing that they simply wanted to catch people's attention, with a famous face like Cherry perfect for the occasion.
«We were looking to put something up that people would notice and maybe turn into to see the great artists' works and support them, too,» said Mike Beaudoin, the driving force behind the project. «We knew it was his 90th birthday, and we thought Don Cherry and Blue would be perfect.»
While Cherry now lives out of the spotlight, it's safe to say he's still remembered as one of the great personalities in hockey media in Canada, and from the response's, it appears he's still very beloved.
