NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh has been nominated by President Joe Biden as a Governor to the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Walsh, who previously held a role in the Biden Administration as Secretary of Labor, entered the role as the National Hockey League Players Association Executive Director less than a year ago, having resigned his position to take on the NHLPA position.
In a
press release, President Biden called Walsh someone who "has spent his life fighting for working people".
According to Frank Seravalli of
Daily Faceoff, Walsh has affirmed his focus on leading the players association, saying he isn't seeking political office and isn't looking to do so in his future.

Walsh has spent almost half his life in political office. A member of the Democratic Party, Walsh was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1996, Walsh became mayor of Boston in 2013, establishing himself as a top political progressive with a strident focus on labor and social policy.
Walsh's political focus on labor rights, himself a former union leader, made him an appealing choice to head labor policy for the pro-Union Biden. Walsh did not seek re-election for a third term as Mayor, Democrat Michelle Wu later won the election, defeating Walsh-backed candidate Annissa Essaibi George.
In 2021, Walsh was nominated as Labor Secretary, later confirmed in the Senate with a vote of 68-29. If Walsh will outright reject the USPS nomination wasn't not confirmed via statement, although his response to 'Daily Faceoff' indicates a disinterest in pursuing politics.
USPS governors serve eight-year terms, with positions for Postmaster General and Deputy Postmaster General without term, the head role filled by Louis DeJoy, a Trump holdover who has clashed with the Biden Administration in the past, although re-emerging as a willing bipartisan figure under Pres. Biden after refusing to resign alongside other Trump officials who were later removed from their non-permanent roles.
As a potential governor of USPS, the role would not impact Walsh's standing as NHLPA Executive Director, and would allow for him the freedom to pursue both.
