Last night marked the final chapter in a trade saga between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After the Hurricanes were knocked out of the playoffs by the New York Rangers in game six, they could finally put the finishing touches on a deal they'd been brewing with the Penguins since the trade deadline.
Remember when the Penguins sent Jake Guentzel packing to the Hurricanes? In return, the Penguins were eyeing two conditional draft picks, three prospects, and Michael Bunting. But with Carolina's playoff journey now over, the trade details have been laid bare by CapFriendly.
The 2024 2nd round pick sent to Pittsburgh #LetsGoPens as part of the Jake Guentzel trade, will NOT upgrade to a 2024 1st round pick. Additionally, Carolina #CauseChaos will retain their 2025 5th round pick.
Unfortunately for the Penguins, things didn't quite go as planned. One of the draft picks they were eyeing won't be upgrading to a first-rounder as they'd hoped. Instead, it stays put as a second-round pick, and they have the Rangers to blame for that.
Sure, the Penguins might be slightly disappointed, but it's nothing compared to the Canes' playoff exit. Despite Guentzel's best efforts—he had nine points in 11 playoff games with Carolina, they still fell ten wins short of the ultimate prize.
