Marner has one year remaining on his contract with the Leafs. He currently makes a little under 11 million dollars against the cap. This could be a potential deterrent to a trade as not many teams can afford to offer him an extension for that amount of money. However, for at least a couple of teams, this does not appear to be an issue.
The Leafs may very well be considering major changes this offseason after yet another first-round exit. The team already parted ways with head coach Sheldon Keefe earlier today, but the product on the ice may need to change as well. Marner very well could be the odd man out as the rest of the core players are harder to trade. Furthermore, Leafs fans are not thrilled with Marner after his performance against the Bruins.
All of that being said, Marner controls his fate with a full no-move clause. He has expressed a desire to stay in Toronto, so the team may have to look elsewhere to make a big change to the lineup.
