Gudas could be seen sneaking up behind Raymond behind the play and he clearly stuck his leg out in an effort to interfere with sophomore forward. He was called for a minor penalty on the play, but it went down as interference, not slewfooting.
A play like this easily could have warranted a call of a major penalty. it was a dangerous move that only served to potentially injure the unaware Raymond. The young forward could not adequately protect himself as he fell as the play was completely unexpected and unnecessary. Luckily, Raymond appeared to be okay, but the DoPS may look at this as a potential suspension or fine for Gudas.
Regardless, the NHL needs to get plays like these out of the game. This play in particular serves no purpose other than to potentially injure players, especially as it was away from the play. Note how Gudas did this to Lukas Raymond, a key player for the Red Wings, and not a random 4th liner. These plays will continue to happen though unless the league sets a clear precent that they are not allowed. Handing Gudas a lengthy suspension for this play should get the point across.
