One of the most legendary rivalries in sports is that between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens. Given where they are in the current season, they could help each other out as one wants to win and the other wants to collect assets.

The two teams match up well, if they add a little cap magic

The Bruins have an excellent record, but they lack offensive punch due to their injury problems and cap issues. There are plenty of middle-six forwards in Montreal, and one may assist the Bruins in extending their front-line scoring depth.
Naturally, cap space is a problem because both do not have much of it. Boston has just over $1.2 million in cap space, while Montreal currently has about $3.5 million. If the Bruins are prepared to pay, Montreal can hold money as they have one more retention spot.
The Bruins are seeking a top six player for trade according to Darren Dreger:
No different from any other year, there are teams looking for centremen and depth at that position – or a top-two or top-three centreman.

What player could cross the boarder from Montreal to Boston

Darren Dreger on TSN Insider Trading disclosed that the Canadiens are considering a trade for forward Sean Monahan, who could become an unrestricted free agent in 2024. He will be a UFA at the conclusion of the season and his deal has an AAV of $1.98 million. The Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, and Edmonton Oilers were among the teams mentioned as possible suitors for the 29-year-old forward, in addition to the Bruins.
Of course, the cap does not add up, but as previously mentioned, the Canadiens may keep a chunk of Monahan's contract in order to make the trade work. Boston would probably only be able to provide the Canadiens with one or two picks.
In 42 games, Monahan has 24 points. In terms of Bruins scoring this season, that would place him seventh overall. That output might provide the middle-six forward group of the Boston Bruins a much-needed boost.
