Former NHL coach Bill Peters resigned from his post as the coach of the Calgary Flames in 2019. He has now gotten a new opportunity to be a bench boss in a different league.
Peters' Resignation
For those who are unfamiliar with the Bill Peters situation he resigned from the Calgary Flames after being accused of harassing and discriminating against a player by the name of Akim Aliu. The incident reportedly happened when Peters was with the Chicago Blackhawks organization. Below is Aliu's statement on events that transpired and the fact that he still to this day has not received an apology from Bill Peters.
Peters was swiftly investigated and removed from his position as the head coach in Calgary since then Peters has been mostly unheard from.
Peters Lands A Job In Junior Hockey
Bill Peters has been named the new Head Coach of the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL. In a news release, Peters says he has changed and has learned a lot.
"I have worked closely with Shades of Humanity to understand and correct my regrettable actions. I have learned a lot through this educational journey and feel ready to return to coaching. I am in a unique position to guide our next generation of community leaders and to establish a more inclusive culture in hockey." - Bill Peters
While Peters has claimed to have changed his actions will speak louder than his words. He vows to improve the culture in hockey and make the space more inclusive.
The WHL also released a statement supporting Peters and the Lethbridge organization in their decision.
"After a thorough review, speaking with representatives from Shades of Humanity, and receiving a commitment from Bill to continue on his path of anti-racism, self-growth and redemption, the WHL is satisfied Bill is ready to return to coaching in the WHL." - Western Hockey League
While people can be deserving of second chances Peters does not seem remorseful for his actions. He was caught and did the work that was required of him but never truly apologized to the player he victimized.
