The Toronto Maple Leafs extended the contract of their Head Coach Sheldon Keefe today. The extension is a long term deal that will keep Keefe around for the foreseeable future. Now General Manager Brad Treliving spoke about why the deal made sense for the Leafs.

Treliving Speaks

Brad Treliving spoke to the media today following the extension of Head Coach Sheldon Keefe. When asked why Sheldon Keefe was the right man for the job Brad Treliving had this to say:
Brad Treliving:

"To me, to have success in this league, you need to keep knocking on the door...When I just look at all the attributes for what are important for a coach, Sheldon's got them"
Keefe possesses a lot of qualities important to Treliving. It is clear that there is a great deal of respect between the two. As for what qualities Treliving is referring to he had this to say:
Treliving said Keefe is "a top coach ... smart ... great communicator."

While this still does not give much away it is clear that Keefe's main attribute is his communication skills.

Treliving Speaks On Keefe's Relationship With Players

As the questions went on Brad Treliving touched on Sheldon Keefe's relationship to the players in the Leafs locker room.
"He's got a real good relationship with our players...

"It's not about being liked as a coach, it's about being respected"

While these comments are complimentary they could cause a bit of a stir. Treliving alludes to the idea that Keefe has a good relationship with players. But then in the next breath talks about how being liked as a coach isn't important. This could cause some questions about whether or not the Leafs players like Sheldon Keefe.
Treliving on getting the players' input on Keefe:

"It's not a popularity contest. But you can tell when a coach has had an impact...And that's one thing that came back to me consistently with the players"
These comments further cloud the idea of whether or not Keefe is liked by the players in the Leafs locker room. However, if he has made an impact on each of the players it may not matter all too much. It is tough to forget though that the Leafs last head coach was pushed out for players not getting along with or liking him
For now, all seems well in Maple Leaf land. As long as Keefe and the Leafs continue to win there should be no issue. If the team begins to struggle Treliving's comments could become a story.
