The Carolina Hurricanes boast a formidable defensive lineup. With nine NHL-grade defensemen on their roster, they're hardly short on talent.

Last season, their defensive lineup included Jaccob Slavin, Brent Burns, Brady Skjei, and Brett Pesce - all top-tier defensemen. Rounding out their defensive squad, they had Jalen Chatfield and Dylan Coghlan, both of whom made healthy contributions.
But the Canes didn't stop there. During the offseason, they bolstered their ranks even further by signing Dmitry Orlov, Tony DeAngelo, and Caleb Jones.

Who Stays, Who Goes?

With such a packed defensive roster and only six available spots, there's increasing speculation about potential trades. Lyle Richardson, writing for The Hockey News, recently weighed in on the Hurricanes' options. He referenced Bryan Baucom of Carolina Hockey Now, who suggested the Hurricanes could address their ongoing need for more scoring by leveraging their defensive depth.
Baucom pointed out the Hurricanes' ongoing need for more scoring. He believes Skjei or Pesce could be used as trade bait to address that issue.

Richardson agreed, noting that the Hurricanes' deep defense could be an advantage, allowing them to trade Skjei or Pesce for a top scoring forward.
Given the Hurricanes' blueline depth, they can afford to part with Skjei or Pesce in a deal to add a scoring forward. Skjei carries an average annual value of $5.25 million, while Pesce carries a cap hit of $4.025 million.
While the Carolina Hurricanes have consistently impressed, they've yet to advance past the Eastern Conference Finals in their recent surge of strong play. The right trade, however, could be the push they need to succeed.
