The Colorado Avalanche had a big game against the Pacific-division-leading Vancouver Canucks last night. They were able to pull off a 3-1 victory but the game was not entirely without controversy.
Avalanche Forward Draws Questionable Penalty Against Canucks
During the game, Avalanche forward Ross Colton drew a penalty on Canucks defenseman Ian Cole for tripping. Making matters worse, the call came with just 3 and a half minutes left in regulation and the Canucks were only down by one goal. Taking a look at the replay shows that the refs certainly messed this one up.
Rick Tocchet seemed not to like this call. You be the judge #Canucks fans, was this a dive?
Were the #Canucks on the wrong side of the officiating again tonight?
This is a rather brutal look for the officials on this one. Cole hardly made contact with Colton at all. It appears as though the Avalanche forward was intentionally trying to mislead the ref, using the net as a screen so he could not see what actually happened.
NHL Announcer Calls Out Colton For Pathetic Dive
Canucks fans were not the only ones to call this out online. NHL announcer Steve Kouleas also called out the forward for the play on X.
Ross Colton is the biggest diver in the @NHL @ScoutingTheRefs @ESPNRefNHL jacks would have not called that !!!!! @SiriusXMNHL
He even tagged NHL rules analyst and former referee Dave Jackson. Jackson declined to comment on the play however.
That being said, it seems pretty obvious that Colton got away with one here. This move puts him right up there with notorious divers such as Tim Stutzle. Hopefully we do not see more of this from Colton though as no one wants hockey to be played like this.
