Sean Avery may have only scored 90 NHL Goals in his career, but off the ice, he's no stranger to taking shots. Not afraid of pulling punches however, the former NHL tough guy has one more for the Edmonton Oilers.
Former NHLer Avery Has Criticisms Over Oilers Season
Sean Avery, the famous former NHL enforcer who perfected the art form of physicality in Hockey, wants to see more toughness from the Edmonton Oilers, who despite having 2 top-10 NHLers in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, are tied for last in the NHL with 5 points and a 2-9-1 record. Not afraid of pulling punches
In a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, Avery called out the Oilers top players making big money, McDavid, Draisaitl & Darnell Nurse, with Avery calling for McDavid, the Oilers captain, to be willing to have answers.
"Fresh faced baby Connor McDavid, you remember him? I don't, because he's been through the goddamn meat grinder of Canadian Media", Avery continued, "And by the way, that's the job when you're the big superstar on the team, when you're the best player on in the world, and you're making $12.5M a year, you gotta answer the bell."
Avery also criticized Leon Draisaitl, who has commonly been dismissive of Edmonton's media having critical questions over his game, saying that he needs to put away the snark towards team journalists and have actual accountability.
"Leon you gotta answer these questions....and by the way, I love Leon Draisaitl's German wit, 'Inglorious Bastards' is one of my favorite movies of all time, but you're at work brother, and the lines don't say, "be a sarcastic German", they say "be a beautiful superstar" who has the most beautiful one-timer wrist shot ever." - Sean Avery
Avery also touched on Connor McDavid's house, which includes a basketball court. Avery said
"Nobody plays basketball in Edmonton but Connor McDavid put a basketball court in his house."
Of note, Edmonton has a basketball team in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, the Edmonton Stingers, who won back-to-back CEBL titles in 2020 and 2021.
Closing out his remarks, Avery said McDavid needs to be able to play before it eventually gets to a point where the fans turn on 97, and he leaves Edmonton to go somewhere else, touching on the accomplishments of the Great One, Wayne Gretzky.
"You gotta show up, you gotta play, and you gotta win games, otherwise, they're gonna turn on you. And I don't want to ever see a video of you crying because you're about to put a L.A. Kings jersey on. We want you to win a Stanley Cup. And by the way, before Wayne left, he won four. - Sean Avery
