The Edmonton Oilers have needed depth in their forward group for some time now, making today's move quite the head-scratcher.

Oilers officially waive a former first-round draft pick

Originally selected No. 6 overall way back in 2007, Sam Gagner was in his third stint with the Oilers after being picked up this summer, but now he officially hits waivers.
Sam Gagner has been placed on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers. That's an interesting move in our eyes. Gagner was very good bottom-six forward in those games in which he played this season.
The veteran forward has five goals and five assists in 27 games played this season, providing the Oilers with great depth and experience, so we have to question this move, but will wait and see how it plays out for the Oilers and other potential contenders looking for depth forwards.
