The Edmonton Oilers made some solid moves in Ken Holland's final year, but now we know of one blockbuster trade that shockingly fell apart.
This past week, the St. Louis Blues have quickly moved to add not one but two young Edmonton Oilers via offer sheet, with both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg tendered offer sheets. Unfortunately for Edmonton, it's going to be tough to retain both, but it could have been very different between the two parties, with Elliotte Friedman reporting that the two teams wanted to make a deal happen at the trade deadline.
That deal would have been centered around Pavel Buchenevich, who, at 29-years of age is seemingly in his prime, coming off 60 or more points in each of his three seasons with the Blues thus far. According to Friedman, the deal would have involved Holloway and Broberg as the main pieces of a trade, and while others would have been added, this would have been a huge win for Ken Holland in his final year as Oilers GM.
As we know, a deal never came to fruition, with the Oilers instead opting to land the cheaper Adam Henrique before ultimately falling in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Florida Panthers. It's unclear what the entire trade would have been, but if the Oilers could have made it happen, it could have made a huge difference, and now, they risk losing both players to St. Louis months later for very little in exchange.
