It's been revealed the New York Rangers were in the mix to trade for Jake Guentzel, the former Carolina Hurricane and current Tampa Bay Lightning star.
Before Guentzel signed his seven-year, $9 million AAV deal with the Lightning, the Rangers, led by GM Chris Drury, were eager to bring him in. They made an offer to acquire his rights from the Canes which included draft picks, but it fell through.

Carolina eventually traded his rights to Tampa Bay for a draft pick, sealing the deal.

They even made a strong offer at the trade deadline when Guentzel was with the Pittsburgh Penguins, which included Brennan Othmann and a first-round pick. However, Guentzel was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes instead. The Rangers would end the Canes season in six games in the second round, but Guentzel did his part with three goals and five points in the series.
