Craig Berube has been a hot name on the coaching market this year, and it appears he was close to landing on the Ottawa Senators.

While it's long been reported that Craig Berube and the Toronto Maple Leafs have potential interest this summer, he was also heavily recruited by the Ottawa Senators. As we know, he didn't take on the role however, as the team officially announced the signing of Travis Green on a four-year deal.
Now, Elliotte Friedman has given the details on the negotiations between Ottawa and Berube, eluding to the fact that it was money that stopped the two parties from coming together.
Elliotte Friedman on the Jeff Marek show mentions Ottawa and Berube went far but tiptoes around the fact that money was the issue there
Ultimately, the team went with what many believe was the cheaper option in Green as they look to come out of a very long rebuild behind the talented core that's been expected to break out for years now. There's been no word on Sheldon Keefe's official firing yet, so it's unclear if Berube will look to take on that role, but for now, we know why he's not with their Ontario rival.
