Sidney Crosby has always been very involved with the Pittsburgh Penguins' front-office operations. The longtime captain was present for Kyle Dubas' interview with the organization, and it now looks like he and longtime friend and teammate Kris Letang will have a say in the Erik Karlsson trade.
Crosby and Letang Weight In
According to the newest report by Rob Rossi of The Athletic, Crosby and Letang have given the Penguins' front office their blessing to fully pursue Karlsson in a trade.
"Captain Sidney Crosby and top defenseman Kris Letang have endorsed acquiring Karlsson. Letang would remain the Penguins' No. 1 defenseman and work on the top pairing. He is willing to change his role on the top power-play unit so Karlsson could quarterback it."

The interesting part here is Letang's willingness to step down as the quarterback of Pittsburgh's top powerplay unit. Karlsson is without a doubt the better offensive player, but we rarely see guys willingly give up top roles such as that.
We decided to try our hand at a mock trade for Karlsson, and while it isn't perfect, we think it would please both sides.
Pittsburgh Receives: Erik Karlsson (43% Retained), 2024 5th Round Pick
San Jose Receives:
Jeff Petry,
Casey DeSmith,
Samuel Poulin, P.O Joseph, Emil Jarventie, 2024 1st Round Pick, 2026 2nd Round Pick
Pittsburgh would be receiving Karlsson at almost half of his current salary for the remainder of his contract and would be able to dump Jeff Petry's contract in the process.
San Jose would receive a massive package of picks, young players, and prospects, as well as a 2nd pairing defenseman in Petry and a backup goalie in DeSmith.
This is just a mock trade, and shouldn't be considered a real rumor.
