Treliving wanted to ensure the Leafs coaching group was sound and full of talented coaches. He decided to hire Guy Boucher and Mike Van Ryn to have the Leafs better coached after Spencer Carbery left for Washington.
Everybody's Roles
In a recent interview, Sheldon Keefe revealed what the role of the new hirings would be in Toronto.
Van Ryn as a defensive coach makes a lot of sense given how that was his role with the St. Louis Blues and how he was a defenseman in the NHL and knows what makes up a solid defensive grouping.
Boucher as the powerplay coach does not make too much sense though. His powerplays when he was in Ottawa were sub-par at best and his overall style was a lot more focused on defense.
However, he had a superstar on his powerplay in Erik Karlsson and he knows what makes a potent powerplay in the NHL that utilizes a superstar. If he can cater the powerplay into a five-man unit he could best use his superstars in Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.
