After the Leafs' elimination and the firing of Dubas a month ago, there were rumors that Sheldon Keefe, the team's coach, might be next to be let go.
Keefe still has one year left on his contract, but with the arrival of Brad Treliving to the Leafs organization, there could be changes ahead.
It's no secret that Treliving is considering his options. Bringing in a new head coach to inject new energy into the team might be appealing to the new GM.
However, respected insider Darren Dreger believes that if Treliving intended to make changes to the coaching staff, he would have done so already. Dreger's view is that Keefe is likely to return as the Leafs' coach next season.
"If Treliving was going to make a coaching change, he would have done it already. Let's see how things start for the Leafs. That's a decision that Brad Treliving may have to make in-season. Unless something dramatic changes in the days ahead here, I believe that Sheldon Keefe will be on the bench to start the year."
In the bigger picture, it makes sense to keep Keefe at least for the first season under Treliving's leadership. If things don't go as planned, Treliving and his team can reconsider Keefe's position during the season.
