It was an up-and-down first season for Matt Murray with the Leafs, but not all hope has been lost. While Murray struggled to prove his worth as a consistent Starter, or even a tandem goalie and was often injured, he showed some signs of his former self. While Toronto may not be the place to rejuvenate his career, he could find fire again in a familiar city.
Trade Proposal Sends Murray to Pittsburgh
Matt Murray got his NHL start in Pittsburgh, and it looks like he could end up there once again. This recent trade proposal has fans wondering if a move involving Murray to Pittsburgh would make sense for the Leafs.
Murray is currently making $4.5 million for the next year, while Mikail Granlund will be making $5 million for the next two seasons. Pittsburgh could save themselves half a million dollars with this deal, and Toronto could get a once prolific scorer for cheap.
Granlund Could Bounce Back With Toronto
Mikael Granlund had one of the worst seasons of his career, but when you consider he scored at over a 0.5-point-per-game pace, that says a lot. At his best, Granlund can be an incredibly useful second-line scorer that any team would love to grab, especially if it's in a cap dump swap such as this one.
Whether or not Toronto is willing to eat the extra half a million dollars for this year and his full $5 million for the season after is unknown, but this is a move they should heavily consider.
