Nylander's ongoing contract negotiations had been arguably the most important storyline surrounding the Leafs this season. The star winger was due to become an unrestricted free-agent for the first time in his career at the end of the season, had he not inked the new deal.

The most fundamental terms are the length and average-annual-value. Of course, both sides wanted long-term security so there is no surprise that the deal was the maximum length of eight years. The cap hit of 11.5 million dollars a season is perhaps a bit steep, but not unexpected given recent reports.

According to Elliotte Friedman, the contract contains 69 million dollars to be paid out in the form of bonuses, 27 million of which will be paid out over the course of the first two years.

The contract appears to be somewhat front loaded, with Nylander getting larger signing bonus in the first half of the deal as well as a higher salary in the first two years.

The deal also contains a full no-move clause which will go into effect immediately as his current contract was modified as part of the extension.

It seems then that Nylander got basically everything he was asking for if not more. Now the only question that remains is whether or not he will be able to help lead the Leafs to a Stanley Cup championship before this deal is over.
