Auston Matthews and his impending contract have been on the minds of Leafs fans and NHL fans throughout the entire summer. As of now, the superstar center is scheduled to be a free agent after the upcoming season. We recently got an update on where negotiations stand.

Matthews Extension Could Be Coming Soon

The best player in Toronto is due for a new contract. Matthews is expected to have a record breaking deal that will change the landscape of NHL contracts. Recently TSN analyst Frank Corrado was able to give fans a peek into the timeline for a possible extension with the Leafs:
But whether it's done August 17th or September 1st or September 15th or the first day of the regular season,
it's all the same. Like, once it's done, it's going to be done.
You just don't want it to start creeping into the season because if you get two, three months down the road,
then you start asking questions. You're like, okay, like, what's holding this thing up?
But we're not there yet. So we shouldn't be panicking like that.

But it's right around the corner.

This is positive news for Leafs fans who have had to hear about doom and gloom scenarios of Matthews leaving for other organizations. An extension is right around the corner. A sigh of relief is almost coming for a close call with losing their biggest star.
Corrado also goes on to explain why it might make sense to wait until Matthews and the team are back in town to announce such a monumental deal:
Although you'd like a contractor to be signed, but I don't know about you. I don't see that happening tomorrow, do you?
No, not tomorrow, but it sounded like things were headed in the right direction.
So, I don't know, you kind of just have to take that at face value if that's what the insiders or experts are telling you.
I would also imagine, because Jimmy, it is August 17th, there's nothing happening.
There's no point in announcing anything like that right now.
Even if it is done, why not just wait until the first day of training camp to announce it?
All the reporters are going to be there. You're going to be there.
All the news that where everyone's going to be there.
You don't have to call a big press conference in the middle of the summer and disrupt everyone's downtime.
And even for the players, you know, like having all your teammates around in one spot.
You do a nice dinner after all that kind of stuff.
In Italian, in Woodbridge, we call that the Bellettes, you know what I mean?
Like all that kind of stuff. It's a nice feeling for everyone if that's the way it's going to go down.
Yeah, absolutely. It's something for everybody. It's the way I describe that.
Yeah, yeah, exactly. So, yeah, you would like to have the contracts done.

This describes an organizational event to celebrate Toronto's biggest star staying in town long term. Also from a logistical standpoint, it makes it easier on all parties involved as well.

Breaking The Bank For Matthews

Corrado also goes on to speak about the impact that the Matthews deal may have on William Nylander's need for a new contract. Matthews who has won a Hart Trophy and had a 60-goal, 100-point season will deserve every dollar he is paid. It will be then on the organization to surround him with the talent required to win the elusive Stanley Cup that this group has been chasing.
