The Toronto Maple Leafs have finally advanced to the second round of the playoffs, a feat they haven't achieved since 2004.
This success can be attributed largely to General Manager (GM) Kyle Dubas' excellent performance during the trade deadline, which provided the team with the necessary advantage to secure a playoff victory.
If the Leafs had lost to Tampa Bay, Dubas' position as GM would be in serious jeopardy. However, now that the team has won, discussions about extending Dubas' contract have been ignited. Yet, something else might stand in the way of Dubas' future with the team.
Why the Leafs are Hesitant to Extend Dubas' Contract

On an episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman revealed crucial information regarding the Leafs' reluctance to re-sign Kyle Dubas.
Friedman stated that one of the three Leafs owners wanted to extend Dubas' contract, but the other two blocked the move. The firing of Mike Babcock in 2019, with $25 million remaining on his deal, significantly impacted the team's approach to contracts.
Babcock continued to receive payment until this season despite being fired, which proved to be a financial burden for the organization. It's understandable that the Leafs are cautious about repeating this scenario with Dubas.
The Leafs' owners may reconsider their stance if the team's playoff run extends beyond the second round.
