A colossal trade, which would see Auston Matthews joining the LA Kings in the final year of his contract, has become a major talking point.

Is Matthews's Future Away from Toronto?

Matthews' future with the Toronto Maple Leafs has been the subject of much conjecture. If he decides against renewing his contract, speculation about potential trade returns from potential suitors is likely to intensify. The possibility of this trade scenario is currently generating significant interest on CapFriendly.

A Closer Look from the Leafs' Viewpoint

For a player of Matthews' caliber, only a world-class offer should be considered. The Kings might have to dig deep, but the rewards could be mutually beneficial.
Quinton Byfield, the 2020 2nd overall pick, is the first piece of the potential deal. Though he hasn't made the same impact in the NHL as some of his draft peers, Byfield's AHL and NHL performances show promise. His exceptional size and skill set position him as a potential game-changer in the league.
Despite not posting mind-blowing stats, Byfield has shown consistent growth, as evidenced by his better playoff performance compared to the regular season. Unlike Alexis Lafrenière, the 2020 first-overall pick who's often considered a bust, Byfield's continuous development and elite capabilities could see him reach point-per-game status as early as next season.
Gabe Vilardi is another key player in this hypothetical trade. A prime example of the rewards of patient development, the 11th overall pick from 2017 enjoyed a breakout NHL season this year, with impressive offensive and defensive numbers.
Vilardi's outstanding defensive skills, demonstrated by a model ranking him in the 99th percentile, could be an asset to a player like Mitch Marner, potentially forming one of the most dominant two-way duos in the NHL.
The inclusion of Cal Petersen in the deal is primarily for salary cap considerations. The Leafs could choose to move Matt Murray or relegate Petersen to the AHL. Additional compensation for the Leafs would be improved draft picks.
The proposed 2023 2nd and 2024 1st round picks could provide a much-needed boost to the Leafs' depleted prospect pool or increase their competitiveness through Vilardi and Byfield.

Why Would LA Kings Consider this Trade?

The Kings' willingness to part with these assets is attributed to one main factor - acquiring Auston Matthews. Despite a challenging season, the former MVP still delivered remarkable performance stats. The prospect of playing in LA, one of Matthews' rumored preferred locations, offers a unique blend of high-profile market exposure and personal privacy.
Should the trade materialize, the Kings could secure a long-term contract extension with Matthews, ensuring their franchise's lead until the 2030s.

The Final Say

While this proposed trade carries significant weight, it appears that Toronto might emerge slightly victorious due to Byfield's potential. However, if Byfield blossoms into a high point player, the advantage may swing towards LA.
