Mathews' next goal will be career goal number 300. If he scores tonight, he would become the fast Maple Leaf to record 300 goals in team history having played just 482 career games. (He's currently at 481 career games played) The record is currently held by Darryl Sittler, who accomplished the task in 684 games. Needless to say, it is only a matter of when, not if, Matthews will break Sittler's record.
If you ask Matthews he would probably tell you that records are nice, but winning games is more important. He is looking to help lead the Leafs on a playoff run lasting more than two rounds for the first time in his career this season. Scoring a goal tonight would be a good way for him to help the Leafs win, but there is no denying that it would also be a major personal accomplishment that should not be taken lightly.
