Last summer, the Toronto Maple Leafs lost one of their forwards, Michael Bunting, to the free agent market. He ended up signing a three-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes valued at $4.5 million a year.

In a recent interview, the player shared the reasons behind his departure from Toronto.

Bunting Explains his Decision to Leave the Toronto Maple Leafs

After last year's dissapointing playoff exit and a change in general managers, there was an air of uncertainty surrounding the future of the team.
A lot of free agents were in the mix, and many of them decided to sign a contract elsewhere.
That's the case of Michael Bunting, who shared insights on his decision to leave the team during an interview.
Here's what he said:
"July 1st opened up and I wasn't really sure where I was going... Going through that whole [process] with me in my hometown, obviously I loved playing in Toronto. That's where I came from and I made a lot of good friends there. Obviously, the organization is great and the fanbase [is] awesome.

With a lot of things that were switching up with the organization, I didn't know where I would stand. It was back-and-forth and then July 1st hits and I've got to make a decision... early in the summer, there wasn't really a firm offer. Just preliminary talks and I had to make a decision that was best for me at that time."

A Key Player for the Hurricanes

Bunting is proving to be a key player in Carolina. He's on his way to score more points than last season, with a current tally of 31 points in 47 games.
There's no doubt that he will play an important role in the team's playoff run.
With the goaltending issues within the Hurricanes this season, players are asked to fill a bigger defensive role. Bunting still managed to get 31 points, and shows that he can also be great defensively.
