With William Nylander signing an eight-year extension with the Leafs yesterday, all eyes are now on Mitch Marner as the next core player due a major extension. Reportedly, the star winger is looking to one-up his teammate.

Marner Reportedly Looking For 'Well North' Of 11.5 Million Dollars Per Season

The Leafs star Winger is reportedly asking for 'well north' of Nylander's 11.5 million dollar average-annual-value deal according to Leafs Morning Take host Nick Alberga.
The discussion is still months away, but by the sounds of it, I'm hearing the Marner camp has its sights set on something well north of $11.5 million per season.
This news comes just hours after Nylander finalized his eight-year extension with the team, making him set to become the second highest paid Leaf behind Auston Matthews next season.

Can The Leafs Afford To Re-sign Marner After Nylander's Extension?

This begs the question of whether or not the Leafs can maintain their strategy of paying the core players everything they want. The Leafs have already struggled to fill out the roster with suitable depth options with just one 11 million dollar player on the team. While the cap is projected to go up substantially over the next two seasons, the gains could entirely be eaten up by Nylander and Marner, effectively putting the team in the same situation they are now.
This current Leafs team does not seem to be as dominant as recent teams so if this is the level of depth the team is going to have to work with perpetually, playoff success may very well continue to elude the franchise.
