This NHL insider has just confirmed that William Nylander's next deal will make him one of the top-paid NHL players if it materializes.
Elliotte Friedman Confirms Reports of Nylanders' Blockbuster Next Deal
William Nylander has had one of the best contract years in recent history, one so good that it could earn him a blockbuster deal. Coming into the year, it was speculated that Nylander could potentially get around $10 Million per year. Now, Elliotte Friedman and Nick Kypreos have revealed that Nylander and the Leafs are close to getting a deal done and that it could be coming in at $11.25 million per year for 8 years.
Elliotte Friedman on NHL Network today on a Nylander extension:
"I wouldn't be surprised if it gets done soon... Nick Kypreos he reported they're talking in the 8x11.25M range. I don't know that for sure but I don't think Nick is off too much if he's off at all. I think they're kind of talking about that kind of range. That's not where Toronto was in the summer, now they're in that area and I do think that's going to get done"
Is $11.25 Million Per Year an Overpay For Nylander's Services?
At the news that Nylander could be paid as much as David Pastrnak, many fans were upset that Treliving and the Leafs could be overpaying for Nylander. While he is having an incredible year, he has yet to break 90 points in the NHL. Giving him $11.25 Million would make him the 6th highest-paid player in the NHL, making more than the likes of Matthew Tkachuk and Mitch Marner.
Framing here reeks of recency bias. Even allowing for a touch of inflation, how can you look at Pastrnak's production at the time of signing last March (150 goals, 300 points in previous 250 GP) and suggest Nylander deserves the same contract?
We will have to wait and see just how much Nylander's value has increased by his performance this year when the details of the deal are announced, if they can truly reach one.
