RUMOR: Top Rival Defenceman Emerges as a Target for the Maple Leafs
Despite being rivals, the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs could be poised to make a trade soon.
Senators Looking to Trade Top Defenseman?
A new report on "Leafs Digest" mentionned the possible trade targets that Brad Treliving should focus on.
Must read on Daily Hockey Dose
According to Frank Seravalli, the Ottawa Senators could be looking to move defenseman
Jakob Chychrun, only a year after acquiring him from the Arizona Coyotes.
With only a year left on his contract, projections show that once he turns free agent, he should get a lot more money than he does now, making only $4.6 million a year.
The option of trading two interesting players in the Leafs' organization to secure his services emerged from the conversation:
Is it worth giving up
Fraser Minten and or Timothy Lilligren in a trade for Chychrun?
If the Maple Leafs truly want to go all-in for a Stanley Cup, there should be no untouchables in the organization. Sacrificing young talents like Minten or Liljegren would hurt the Leafs, but getting Chychrun could turn out to be a home-run for Treliving.
"A player like Chychrun would put the Leafs over the hump. I feel like
that would put them right into Contender status.
The forwards on the Leafs are strong so there are no issues there, especially with way the way the team isplaying now and kind of a culture reset we've seen it so far this year withsomeof the rough stuff.
Chychrun would put the team over the top that and would be a fantastic move [with] a reasonable cap hit. It's just up to the Ottawa Senators because he has a no movement clause on a pretty reasonable deal"
Chychrun's no-trade-clause could come in the way of that deal, but as long as the Leafs remain in the playoff picture, the defenseman should accept to be traded there.
Elliotte Friedman Shares his Opinion on Leafs' Untouchable Players
Friedman added a new perspective. He believes there are a few untouchable players in the Leafs' organization.
He'd be unwilling to part with
Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten, nor the 2024 first round pick.
The Leafs are reluctant to part with their 2024 first Easton Cowan or FraserMinten and prefer to acquire a player with term or a player that they knowthey can extend at the deadline. It seems like Brad Treliving just wants all the positives with none of the negatives at this deadline.
This leaves Niemela as the main trade piece and it makes sense to move him for a top four D that helps now and in the future. There won't be much room on the right side for him to break out so Niemela is the guy we're going to bet on
Before the March 8th trade deadline, the Leafs will have decisions to make and we can't wait to see what Treliving will pull off.
