Brad Marchand Learned the hard way that Devils rookie defenseman Simon Nemec is not afraid to throw his weight around if given an opportunity. The 35-year-old captain was thrown to the ice in a play that will have many of his haters laughing at him.

Marchand Gets Thrown To The Ice By 19-Year-Old Rookie Defenseman

The play came as the Bruins were attempting to enter the Devils zone but went offsides. Marchand skated to Nemec and the two quickly became physical as the rookie defender used his size advantage to grab a hold of the Bruins captain. Things ended quickly though as Nemec elected to slam Marchand into the ice instead of waiting for the linesmen to come separate the two. The defenseman earned himself praise from his own captain for the play.
Nico Hischier on Simon Nemec going up against Brad Marchand:

"It tells a lot. It shows his character and he can play hard, he's here to play hard. I love it.»

Nemec was not the only Devils rookie who stood out tonight. Despite the loss, their goaltender Nico Daws also showed a glimpse of what the future can look like for New Jersey.

Devils Future Looks Bright As Rookies Shine In Loss To Bruins

Daws was arguably the team's best player tonight as he gave up just two goals to the Bruins, who thoroughly out chanced the Devils in the game. The rookie netminder has saved nearly five goals above expected in just his last two starts according to public models. This is especially important to the Devils, who have consistently gotten some of the worst goaltending in the entire league the year.
Nico Daws saved 2.54 goals above expected against the Bruins today, after saving 2.41 vs. Florida on Saturday per @EvolvingHockey.

Two strong starts for Daws in what's been a really challenging season for the NJD in goal.
Nemec meanwhile, has quietly developed into one of the NHL's best U20 defenders. He would likely be in the mix for the Calder trophy had he spent the entire season with the Devils so far.
All of this points to a brighter future for the Devils. The team can still contend this season though, especially if their rookie players continue to give them performances like these.
