The Toronto Maple Leafs have been busy this offseason. In addition to the hiring of Brad Treliving as GM, the Leafs made interesting acquisitions like Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and John Klingberg. Everything indicates that Treliving might not be done yet.

A Familiar Connection?

After serving as the General Manager for the Calgary Flames, Brad Treliving has joined the Leafs and brought his reputation for building a tough, physical team. Now, he may be looking to bring one of his ex-players to infuse that grit into the Leafs' lineup.
Heading into the final year of his contract with the Flames, 26-year-old defenseman Noah Hanifin could be the answer to what Toronto is seeking. Last season, Hanifin tallied 38 points, blocked 129 shots, and delivered 76 hits, all while averaging 22:39 minutes per game.
Hanifin offers a blend of physicality and offensive capability. He's versatile on defense, comfortable playing both sides, and can handle the minutes. Additionally, Hanifin is entering the prime of his career, which aligns well with the Leafs' core players.

The Cost of Bringing in Hanifin

As a young, high-minutes defenseman, Noah Hanifin carries substantial value. However, his impending free agency could help make it happen. A trade closer to the deadline could be easier to negotiate than one right now.
While forward William Nylander's contract status makes him a frequently discussed trade piece in potential deals for Hanifin, Toronto also has a cache of draft picks and promising prospects that could entice the Flames into a deal.
