The Maple Leafs might be starting to get concerned about their young talent Matthew Knies after seeing what the Blues did to the Oilers with their two prospects.

Now that the Broberg and Holloway offer sheets from the Blues have been accepted with just a couple of draft picks in return to the Oilers, the Leafs need to start thinking about their future prospect Matthew Knies.
Knies is eligible to sign an extension this summer. His second year was a breakout one for the 57th overall pick by Toronto in the second round of the 2021 draft. He played in 80 games last season and tallied 36 total points (15G, 21A).
There is some concern now that Knies could be the next offer sheet coming after this season concludes as seen on X.
But this is not really like the Holloway and Broberg deals that the Blues were able to pull off. Those two players were not as high regarded by the Oilers and the Maple Leafs are for Knies.
Knies is in line to be a top liner this season, playing left wing next to Matthews and either Nylander or Marner on the right. In his rookie campaign he was able to score 15 goals, which puts him in a range to be a 20 plus goal scorer next season.
With a player like Knies, the Leafs are not looking to take a chances on losing him. A draft pick consideration for this second rounder would not be worth the risk of the talent that Knies can bring to the team.
With the Leafs looking to have a lot of extra cap space after this season, even if Knies happens to get an offer sheet from another team, the Leafs would most likely match that offer to keep Knies playing with his idol Auston Matthews.
The fact of the matter is, the Leafs would probably not even let Knies get himself into a position where he would get an offer sheet from another organization. The Leafs see they have a young rare talent in this day and age. The truth is they will likely get Kneis locked up before we reach July 1st, 2025.
