With the Toronto Maple Leafs still working to fix their salary cap issues, NHL insider David Pagnotta suggested Brad Treliving has quietly worked to move defenseman Conor Timmins.

Ever since the departure of Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas, Brad Treliving has yet to meet all the marks in putting together a well-rounded team in Toronto. With the 2024-25 NHL season just weeks away, the Maple Leafs are short on funds and still have yet to sign Jani Hakanpaa and Nick Robertson, even after recruiting Florida Panthers Stanley Cup winner Steven Lorentz on a PTO deal. Whether it be injuries or plain desire to be in the lineup, these deals are less likely going to come through.
"The fact that's gone on this long probably doesn't suggest good things, encouraging things. The longer it goes and he doesn't have a contract, it doesn't look like he's gonna end up with one. But the best I can say right now is I don't know 100% it's not going to go that way, just the writing doesn't appear to be too encouraging. This would be just a case where the Leafs would have concern or their doctors or whoever they're relying on for advice that it's too big of a risk that he won't be able to play because of the condition of his knee."
However, reports indicate Brad Treliving is working on this issue behind the scenes, selecting one defenseman in particular to shop. According to the Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Toronto Maple Leafs could be working to send off Conor Timmins to free up another $1.1 million in cap space.
"The Maple Leafs currently have slightly over $1.275 million in salary cap space but could free up an additional $1.1 million by trading defenceman Conor Timmins, or the team could place him on waivers and if he clears then send him down to the AHL."
The 25-year-old defenseman played in only 25 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, posting one goal and 10 total points. Though Conor Timmins has the potential to improve from a year he got sidelined with mononucleosis, he could be a good player to send away for more cap space. Whether or not Brad Treliving follows through with this deal remains to be seen.
