Max Pacioretty was linked to the Maple Leafs for several months in the off-season, and he officially inked a PTO with the team before making his pre-season debut on Sunday night. The veteran forward impressed with two goals in the 6-5 overtime loss to Ottawa, and it prompted top Insider Elliotte Friedman to reveal on social media that it may not be a PTO after all, and that Pacioretty will be in Toronto this season.
This would be a major boost for the Maple Leafs lineup, as Pacioretty could be a steadying presence in the bottom-six, while providing Toronto the depth of scoring that they've sorely lacked in recent years. While he's not been healthy in recent years, that appears to have changed over the last 12 months, and if Pacioretty can play on a line with John Tavares and a younger winger, they may provide the perfect safety blanket for a rising star such as Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten or Pontus Holmberg.
There's still plenty of time left in the pre-season to figure out lines, but for now, all signs point to Max Pacioretty staying in Toronto all season long, in what could be a game changing move for the team, especially if he continues his form from last night.
