Mitch Marner is likely on his way out of Toronto, and now a former NHLer has outlined the only scenario in which he would ultimately stay.

After months of speculation, we are still no closer to figuring out the future of Mitch Marner as a Toronto Maple Leaf, with the latest update being that Head Coach Craig Berube is excited to coach the star forward.
Craig Berube on Mitch Marner: "He's a character guy. He's a great person. Obviously, a great player. I'm looking forward to coaching him."
Marner will still hit free agency in the summer of 2025 however, and according to former NHLer Mike Rupp, there's only one way that he remains with the team, and it's highly unlikely.
"Mitch Marner is going to get a significant raise, but I don't know if that would happen in Toronto. So does Mitch want to stay in Toronto without getting that, or is it time now for him to get paid cause he's watched other guys in this organization get paid?"
Rupp states that to stay in Toronto, Marner would need to take a significant pay cut, as he is expected to get a huge raise on the open market, and if he wants to remain with his hometown team, he would need to sign a very, very team friendly deal. Ultimately, that's highly unlikely to happen, as he could potentially command $12 million AAV or more as a free agent, so unless something drastically changes, expect him to be on a new team by the summer of 2025.
