Now that Tyler Bertuzzi is no longer a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs after he chose to sign with the Chicago Blackhawks, his replacement may have been found.
Tyler Bertuzzi was a key member of the Leafs forward group last season, and now that he's gone, Toronto needs to look for his replacement, and they believe they may have found him: Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets. Ehlers was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, one spot after William Nylander.
Ehlers has put up 457 points in his career so far, but his most impressive stat is his career +/- rating of +92, which proves how well he plays in his own end.
Nik Ehlers is a first-line-calibre talent and the Jets will miss him sorely when he's gone. If they manage to win a trade with him as the centrepiece I will be surprised.
A player as good as Ehlers means Winnipeg surely wouldn't want to get rid of him, right? On the contrary, as he is entering the final year of his contract and hasn't been getting the ice time he was hoping for. On the Leafs side, Nick Robertson has publicly asked for a trade, so it would be interesting to see if the Leafs would include him in a deal to acquire Ehlers.
Disappointing to hear that Nick Robertson has requested a trade from the Leafs. His game definitely has potential: hard shot, some speed and skill. Obviously still a ways to go to round out his game, but I am hopeful
The Leafs are in win now mode, and with Auston Matthews and William Nylander in their prime, GM Brad Treliving will need to to whatever he can to ensure they make a deep run in the playoffs, and adding Ehlers would surely help with that.
