Leafs head coach Craig Berube told Nick Robertson that he would get a bigger role on the team this season, which led the young forward to sign a new deal.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Nick Robertson will get his shot with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season despite asking for a trade earlier this summer. In fact, head coach Craig Berube has promised him an opportunity to make an impact. Based on those words by his new head coach, he signed a one-year deal with the team earlier today. There are still rumblings, however, that he will still be traded shortly.
Nick Robertson just never seemed to be able to find his groove under former coach Sheldon Keefe, and even with the new voice of Craig Berube behind the bench now, the young forward felt like he wanted a fresh start. He reportedly requested a trade, and GM Brad Treliving has been working on honoring that request, according to Dreger, despite the recent signing of a contract.
Fresh off a new contract, the 22-year-old winger scored 14 goals in 56 games last season and is seeking a more substantial role this season. The next few weeks will be interesting to see whether Nick Robertson gets his trade wish granted, or whether he is given more minutes with the Leafs.
