Leafs Nick Robertson still likely to be traded shortly despite new contract

It's been a few months now, and finally some news on Nick Robertson. The young talented forward signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2024-25 season. After an earlier request to be traded, many thought the extension meant it was all behind him.

Things did, however, take a twist when top NHL Insider Frank Seravalli reported that the want to leave Toronto hasn't changed with league chatter suggesting he still wants out and may be moved prior to the start of the season.

Sure, with Max Pacioretty about to sign, and young guns like Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten fighting for a roster spot, the Leafs have tons of players. In the end, following all of the rumors of impending doom, trading Nick Robertson might prove the most prudent decision.

At 22, it's obvious that indeed Nick Robertson does have a brilliant NHL future ahead of him, provided he is able to keep off the injury list. But he thinks he deserves a more significant role today, and that probably puts him near the exit, whether that's during the off-season or closer to the trade deadline. His potential definitely stands out, as he scored 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games in his first full season

Toronto, having shown a lot of patience with him, might finally be ready to move on, especially if they can bring in a key veteran in return for Nick Robertson to boost their Stanley Cup chances.
