The Edmonton Oilers had a chance to match the offer for two of their youngest stars, but now Stan Bowman has seemingly revealed why that didn't happen.

After a tense week of waiting, the Edmonton Oilers decided not to match the offer sheets given for Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, and instead walked away with a second and a third round draft pick. While some Oilers fans were disappointed the team didn't match the offer, when the price tag for both was revealed, it certainly led to many shocked reactions.
Now, General Manager Stan Bowman has opened up on the situation in a recent interview, revealing that neither player was worthy of their current price tag, and with the salary cap situation in Edmonton, it made no sense to match the offers.
"The players can probably grow into those deals, but as of today, they're way above their actual performance," Bowman told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.
Now, the team will need to find a way to fill their current roster with cheap players to give Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl an opportunity to push for another Stanley Cup, but if these salary cap issues continue, they may struggle to keep this squad together. As for Broberg and Holloway, they will both now have significant opportunities to get all the playing time they want in St. Louis, and while Bowman said he believes both could play their way into being worth that price tag, as of right now, they simply aren't.
