The off-season started with a positive outlook for Marner, as he was seen with new head coach Craig Berube. Even Brad Treliving tried to dispel any rumors about Marner's status with the team, saying what a great talent he is.
Marner has opened up before about his love for playing in Toronto and with the team. So, by the time training camp started, he made it clear that his negotiations with the organization were to be private.
Elliotte Friedman was able to sit down with Marner, even after he said during opening day of camp, that he was going to remain silent about his situation. The Sportsnet analyst brief conversation with Marner aired during the first intermission of the Leafs vs Sens game.
As the interview came to a close, Friedman asked Marner if there was anything that he wanted to say to Leafs fans specifically. Marner gave a clear message to the fans, and a very detailed 'thank you' to the team supporters.
Even with this, it appears that many fans still want to see Marner win them over with his actions on the ice and not words. They want to see the forward prove himself that he is the guy that was drafted to be the next star on the team.
During the interview it was confirmed negotiations are ongoing. The hopes are that the extension gets done very soon so this can be put behind the 27-year-old forward.
