Kampf still has three years remaining on his contract where he will be paid $2.4M per year. As had been made well aware recently, the Leafs are right up against the salary cap, and changes must be made in order to allow them some wiggle room before the regular season starts. Nick Kypreos has a strong feeling David Kampf is the odd man out.
Kampf is a great defensive forward for the Leafs, blocking shots and providing physicality when needed, however, he struggles heavily in the offensive zone when it's time to put up points. The Leafs may feel that spending close to 3 million dollars on a player who can't score simply isn't worth it anymore.
Kampf is a really good in your face guy, able to defend nicely against the other team's top talent, however his lack of point production is causing GM Brad Treliving to explore all options, with a trade likely to be completed over the summer.
