The Maple Leafs had a need on the left wing and with Nick Robertson still holding out for a trade, they could have used Filip Zadina's services greatly. He'd have had a chance to rejuvenate his NHL career on a strong team, and Toronto would've gained a player with speed, skill, and top-nine scoring potential. But before the Leafs could ink a deal, HC Davos swooped in and secured the young forward.
A first-round pick in 2018, Filip Zadina has struggled to fully tap into his skill in the NHL. The 24-year-old is coming off a year in which he tied his career-best with 13 goals, but it came on a struggling San Jose Sharks team. His NHL career is by no means over, but if he wants to make it back as soon as possible, he will need to play well in Switzerland. Perhaps then teams such as the Leafs will take a second look at him once again.
