This week former Humboldt Broncos goalie and bus crash survivor Jacob Wassermann made his much anticipated debut at the Paralympics Games in Paris.

The Humboldt Broncos bus crash was a tragedy that shocked the world. A bus taking the junior hockey team crashed and led to the passing and injury of many of the passengers. One of those passengers on board was goaltender Jacob Wassermann.
In the accident, Jacob Wassermann was left paralyzed. He would go on to eventually begin life again after the accident and was determined to stay involved in sport. This is when he found adaptive sports specifically Para Rowing. In 2022, he began competing on the international stage and eventually qualified for the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
Since qualifying fans of Team Canada and those who know Jacob Wassermann's story all around the world have been waiting to see him in action on the biggest stage. This week the world got that opportunity as Jacob Wassermann competed in 3 different races at the Paralympics.
His best performance would come in the 2,000-meter race where he would place 10th. Ultimately he did not come away from the Paralympic Games with a medal but now forever will be a Paralympian. At the age of 24 Jacob Wassermann still has plenty of runway ahead of him in his rowing career. Despite a disappointing result in Paris Jacob Wassermann knows this is only the beginning.
I'm still learning so much. I'm so new in this sport, Wassermann said. Some things go wrong here and there. Start wasn't the cleanest. I had to recover from that. There's still things I'm learning how to do.

Now he will work on honing his craft over the next 4 years and look to qualify for the 2028 Paralympic Games. If he qualifies those games will be a bit closer to home taking place in Los Angeles, California.
While Jacob Wassermann's games are complete he Paralympics continue through September 8th. Continue to support these tremendous athletes and the time and dedication they put into their craft to become Paralympic athletes.
