Today a new report has revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs have opened themselves up to suffer the same fate as the Edmonton Oilers if Nick Robertson gets an offer sheet.

The Toronto Maple Leafs still have not agreed to a contract with unsigned restricted free agent Nick Robertson. To this point in the offseason that was no big deal and Nick Robertson was expected to come back. However, the recent loss of both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway by the Edmonton Oilers due to an offer sheet has raised concern.
The scenarios between Philip Broberg and Nick Robertson are very similar. Both players are former first-round picks and top prospects who did not receive significant opportunities. This was followed by a trade request by both players at different points.
Now the Toronto Maple Leafs head deep into the NHL offseason with Nick Robertson unsigned and very little salary cap space to work with.

Toronto Maple Leafs lack of salary cap space could cost them Nick Robertson

As of today the Toronto Maple Leafs only have around $1.25 million in salary cap space. This means if any team wanted to sign Nick Robertson they would have to offer anything over that to make things difficult on the Maple Leafs.
If a team decides to sign Nick Robertson to a contract near $3 million then the Maple Leafs would need to clear significant salary cap space to bring back Nick Robertson. This could seem like a no-brainer to some organizations. However, Nick Robertson's injury history could prevent teams from going all in on this.
In past seasons Nick Robertson has struggled to stay healthy on several occasions. For the first 3 seasons of his pro career, Nick Robertson did not break the 40 games played marker. In 2023-24 he finally did so but still only played 65 total games between the NHL and AHL. This lack of availability could scare many teams away from providing an offer sheet.
As the offseason continues on the Toronto Maple Leafs might want to be proactive in either trading Nick Robertson or creating the necessary space to sign him so they do not leave themselves vulnerable to an offer sheet.
