The Toronto Maple Leafs went out in disappointing fashion this year, losing in game 7 to the Boston Bruins after coming all the way back from a 3-1 series deficit. Many critics argued that this was the final straw for much fo the Leafs core, and the Leafs have already moved on from head coach Sheldon Keefe since the end of the season.
While the Leafs made a decision on Sheldon Keefe, a lot of the discourse has remained regarding what they plan on doing with members of the core 4, with most of the discussion focusing on Mitch Marner. Marner was absent again this playoff series, posting just 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points in 7 post-season games this year. With his contract up for extension this season, and expiry after next year, he has had the largest target on his back regarding a potential trade, and it appears that media around the league agrees.
Of course, any move of Marner would have to come with his consent, as he has a full NMC in his contract. This vastly decreases the potential value that the Leafs could get back in his return unless he agrees to waive. With all the discussion regarding his poor performance, though, that may not be a long shot.
