The real reason William Nylander missed Auston Matthews' captaincy press conference revealed
William Nylander was the only one of the Toronto Maple Leafs superstar foursome including Mitch Marner, John Tavares, absent from Auston Matthews captaincy coronation.
It was still somewhat unexpected that a prominent member of the Core 4 was missing from Auston Matthews' unveiling as the team's 26th captain on Wednesday.
Yet it's understandable because Nylander spends most of his offseason in his native Sweden, and this year was no exception.
That same day, Nylander and his brother, and newest Leaf Alex Nylander, were at a charity launch event for the Swedish golf brand 'GOATLANE' at Bro Hof Slott Golf Club. Not only was it a planned event, but it made no logistical sense for him to travel for an hour press conference when a phone call would do just fine with Matthews.
After a torrid season where he posted 40 goals and 98 points, alongside that 8-year $92 million extension, fans are eager to see if he picks up where he left off in the 2024-25 season.
