It was an eventful night for the Canucks on Wednesday as they embarrassed the Oilers with an 8-1 victory in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. There was one confusing moment in the third period when Thatcher Demko suddenly left the game, despite a strong performance and a big lead.
Tocchet Reveals Why Demko Left Game
In his post-game interview, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet revealed that his number one netminder was battling the flu during the game. Apparently, it was so bad that he threw up inside his mask during the 3rd period, causing him to come out of the game early.
The Canucks have reportedly had the flu going around the locker room for several days. Many players, including Demko have been battling the illness, even during last night's game.
Saturday Starter Questionable
While Demko was well enough to start Wednesday night, it seems that he would have been better off taking the night off. Now that we have seen the physical consequences of playing through the illness it seems that Tocchet may want to consider turning to backup goalie Casey DeSmith for Saturday's rematch in Edmonton. That being said, the game is still a couple of days away so perhaps Demko and the rest of the team will have enough time to recover.
