Amazon Buys Minority Stake in Diamond Sports Group
The NHL was recently in some hot water as Diamond Sports Group, the parent company for Bally Sports and Entertainment, filed for bankruptcy. Bally Sports was the regional broadcaster for many NHL teams, and there was a risk of losing broadcasting for these local markets.
Now, Amazon has bought a minority stake in the company, and plans on broadcasting the games on Amazon Prime.
Big news this morning that Amazon is acquiring a minority stake in Diamond Sports Group.
The regional sports network filed for bankruptcy last year, putting local media rights for 37 teams across the NBA, MLB, and NHL in jeopardy.
Now, customers can watch games on Amazon Prime.
This is massive news, as Amazon enters the NHL broadcasting world. They have had some success with streaming Thursday Night football on Amazon Prime, and now are using this acquisition to break into other sports. This could open access to regional NHL games that were hard to find, as well.
