The annual interview with Gary Bettman conducted by Ron MacLean, a somewhat controversial figure in the world of hockey, drew unexpected attention this year.
Missed Opportunity
The chance to interview the commissioner of one's sport often comes with the responsibility to pose tough questions, getting insightful and meaningful answers. However, this wasn't the approach chosen by Ron MacLean this year.
He rather preferred to create a cozy atmosphere with Gary Bettman, an action that was widely criticized.
Commentator Jeff Veillette was the first to call MacLean out:
I miss when the annual Ron MacLean vs Gary Bettman interview was appointment viewing for those who wanted to see the latter actually get challenged. This year we got five minutes of Ron praising Gary and Gary listing off everyone who has ever denied the Coyotes an arena deal.
Need for a New Voice at HNIC
Frustration amongst fans with Ron MacLean's conduct is mounting. Many believe that it's time for a fresh face on Hockey Night in Canada.
