Today a new announcement showed a major flip from Gary Bettman on the topic of gambling.
Bettman Flips His Position On Gambling
Around a decade ago Gary Bettman joined other NHL commissioners to fight against the legalization of gambling. Bettman was vehemently against the idea of gambling. Since then, the NHL has expanded to Vegas and apparently flipped its gambling position.
Less than a decade ago, Gary Bettman joined commissioners in opposing sports gambling, writing letters to the Supreme Court fighting its legalization.
Yesterday, @BetMGM added a licensed online slot game in NJ that has all 32 NHL team logos.
With the increase in sports gambling across the U.S. it is not surprising to see Bettman switch up his thoughts. With the NHL looking to catch up to other leagues in revenue gambling partnerships will likely be an avenue to do so. However, this could also be a slippery slope for those in the league.
NHL Sends Mixed Signals On Gambling
While one day the NHL is promoting gambling the next they could be suspending a player for using the services advertised by the game. This happened recently with Senators forward Shane Pinto.
Sources say the #NHL suspension for #Sens RFA Shane Pinto is for sports betting related activity, which would make it the first suspension for sports gambling in league history.
Since this suspension, the NHL has announced several gambling partnerships.
PENN Entertainment announces partnership with the @NHL for online sports betting brands ESPN BET and theScore Bet.
These double standards could set a dangerous precedent for the NHL, its consumers, and its players. The league will need to consider their future moves surrounding gambling incredibly carefully or they will start to turn the opinion of their consumers.
