Gary Bettman's Leaked Salary Sparks Fan Outrage Across the NHL

Despite the NHL featuring some of the worst-compensated athletes among professional sports leagues, one would assume its commissioner would be similarly modestly paid. However, it has recently come to light that Gary Bettman's annual salary is a staggering $9.6 million. This puts him on par with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who earns $10 million a year, even though the NBA is far more profitable.

This means that Bettman earns more than a vast majority of NHL players, including stars like Sidney Crosby, Leon Draisaitl, Alex Ovechkin, Cale Makar, and Adam Fox. Astonishingly, only 17 NHL players in the league earn more money annually than him.

According to HockeyZonePlus, Bettman has accumulated a total of over $166 million (or $212 million when adjusted for inflation) during his tenure, making him the wealthiest individual in NHL history. Although it is expected that superstar Connor McDavid will surpass this figure eventually, it remains shocking that not a single player has earned more over their career than the league's commissioner.

However, none have stayed as long as him in the NHL.

Considering that NHL players are subject to a 17% escrow on their salaries, isn't it time for Bettman to consider a salary reduction? Clearly, he's not one to make sacrifices for the greater good of the league...
